The UPSC conducts various civil service examinations in India, including the Civil Services Examination (CSE), Indian Forest Service Examination (IFSE), and others. The CSE is one of the most popular exams conducted by the UPSC, and its syllabus is quite extensive. Here's a general overview of the UPSC CSE syllabus:
Preliminary Examination (Objective Type):
The preliminary examination consists of two papers:
- General Studies Paper I: This paper includes topics such as current events of national and international importance, history of India and the Indian National Movement, Indian and World Geography, Indian Polity and Governance, Economic and Social Development, Environmental Ecology, General Science, and more.
- General Studies Paper II (CSAT): This paper tests candidates' aptitude in areas like comprehension, interpersonal skills, logical reasoning, analytical ability, data interpretation, general mental ability, and basic numeracy.
Main Examination (Descriptive Type):
The main examination consists of nine(9) papers:
- Paper A - Indian Language: Candidates have to choose one of the Indian languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution. This paper is not compulsory for candidates whose mother tongue is one of the listed languages.
- Paper B - English: This paper tests candidates' proficiency in English.
- Essay Paper: Candidates have to write an essay on a given topic.
- General Studies Paper I: Includes topics like Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography of the World and Society, and Governance, Constitution, Politics, Social Justice, and International Relations.
- General Studies Paper II: Covers topics related to Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice, and International Relations.
- General Studies Paper III: Covers topics like Technology, Economic Development, Biodiversity, Security and Disaster Management, and Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
- General Studies Paper IV: Focuses on Ethics, Integrity, and Aptitude.
- Optional Subject - Paper I: Candidates can choose one optional subject from a list of subjects. There are two papers for the optional subject.
- Optional Subject - Paper II: The second paper for the chosen optional subject.
Personality Test (Interview):
Candidates who clear the main examination are called for a personality test (interview) where they are assessed on their overall personality, communication skills, and suitability for the civil services.
